Transportation assistance in Southern Ohio
More than a ride. Support from door to destination.
SILK caregivers may help older adults and adults with care needs get to appointments, complete errands, shop for essentials, and return home with less stress for the entire family.

Independence beyond the front door
Getting there is only one part of the day.
A family may be able to arrange a ride but still worry about getting ready, walking safely to the vehicle, remembering what to bring, navigating the destination, carrying groceries, or settling back in at home. Transportation assistance can connect those pieces into one supported routine.
Medical appointments
Help preparing to leave, traveling to routine appointments, navigating arrival, and returning home.
Everyday errands
Trips for groceries, household essentials, banking, prescription pickup, or other planned needs.
Community connection
Support for approved social activities, family visits, personal appointments, or meaningful outings.
Door-through-door help
Appropriate assistance from the home to the vehicle, at the destination, and safely back inside.
Shopping support
Help making a list, selecting items, carrying manageable purchases, and putting essentials away.
Routine combined care
Transportation may fit within a broader visit that also includes meals, companionship, homemaking, or personal care.

Planned around the person
A good outing begins before anyone starts the car.
- Confirm the destination, time, and expected length
- Allow enough time for dressing and mobility needs
- Bring necessary personal items and appointment information
- Plan for walkers or other manageable mobility equipment
- Consider weather, steps, parking, and rural drive time
- Coordinate the return-home routine
Every request is reviewed according to the client’s needs, care plan, mobility, destination, schedule, vehicle arrangements, authorization or payment source, and caregiver availability.
Why accompaniment matters
A familiar person can make the entire outing easier.
Less pressure on family
Adult children can stay at work or manage other responsibilities while knowing the day has planned support.
More confidence for the client
A calm caregiver can help the person move through an unfamiliar or tiring outing without feeling rushed.
Better continuity at home
The same visit may include getting ready, a meal, reminders, light homemaking, or companionship before and after the trip.
Scope and safety
Transportation is matched to the actual trip.
SILK provides non-medical home care. Transportation assistance is planned as part of an appropriate care arrangement—not as an on-demand taxi, ambulance, or specialized medical transport service.
Some people need only companionship and a dependable ride. Others need mobility support or equipment that requires a different vehicle, trained medical transportation, or emergency response. We review those details before agreeing that a trip is appropriate.

Transportation FAQ
Questions before planning a trip.
Call with the exact address and needs for the clearest answer.
What transportation assistance can SILK provide?
SILK may provide planned, non-medical transportation and caregiver accompaniment for appointments, errands, shopping, prescription pickup, and approved community activities when the trip fits the care plan and can be supported safely.
Can a caregiver stay during an appointment?
Depending on the care arrangement, schedule, destination rules, and client needs, a caregiver may remain with the client and provide non-medical accompaniment. Families should explain what support is expected when requesting the trip.
Can transportation be combined with other home care services?
Yes. A visit may also include help getting ready, personal care, companionship, meal preparation, shopping, light homemaking, or settling back in at home when those tasks are included in the care plan.
Does SILK provide wheelchair transportation?
Vehicle and mobility needs must be reviewed individually. A person who requires a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, specialized transfer equipment, medical monitoring, or stretcher transportation may need an appropriate specialized transportation provider.
Is SILK an emergency medical transportation service?
No. SILK provides non-medical home care and planned transportation assistance. Call 911 for an emergency or use an appropriate medical transportation provider when clinical monitoring or specialized transport is required.
Does Medicaid/PASSPORT cover transportation assistance?
Coverage depends on eligibility, the person’s authorized services, care plan, program rules, and approval. The administering program determines what is covered. Private-pay transportation assistance may also be evaluated.
Where is transportation assistance available?
SILK evaluates requests throughout its Southern Ohio service area. Availability depends on the exact pickup address, destination, distance, schedule, care needs, payment or authorization, vehicle arrangements, and caregiver availability.
How do I request transportation assistance?
Call SILK at 740-245-1051 with the pickup address, destination, appointment time, expected trip length, mobility needs, requested assistance, and whether Medicaid/PASSPORT or private pay may be involved.
